Welcome to My Thoughts on Leadership Blog
Jul 19, 2017Hello and welcome to my blog about leadership. My plan is to provide you with high-quality content on the topic of leadership and everything related to leadership. At this point, you might be wondering who am I and what qualifies me to provide leadership advice to you?
My name is Ed Pallas, and I am a lifelong student of leadership. I began a formal study of the topic in 2008 and have been hooked ever since. Leadership, in its essence, is about influence. Influence involves the study of human behavior. Learning why we humans behave as we do is fascinating and cool (ok, so at least cool in an academic, nerdy kinda way). Ever sat at a mall, restaurant, or local Walmart and watched people? If so, welcome to the people watcher (aka – student of human behavior) club. There is nothing more interesting than watching people and trying to figure out why they do what they do.
In my role as a student of leadership, I earned a Master of Science degree in Management/Applied Behavioral Science from Johns Hopkins University and a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership and Innovation from Wilmington University. I teach on the topic of leadership at the undergraduate level at the University of Maryland and the doctoral level at Wilmington University. I also teach for the International Association of Chiefs of Police in their Leadership in Police Organizations Program. I’ve made plenty, of leadership mistakes. Even with all my book learning and degrees I still make mistakes, feel uncertain about some of my choices, and question some of my own decisions. I like to think I won’t repeat any of these mistakes. I’m not sure if that is true, but I do try to learn from each one and try to develop my leadership skills every day.
In this blog, I will address many of the questions I have been asked over the years such as “Are leaders born or made”, “Do certain personality types make better leaders?”, “What leadership books do you recommend?”, and “What do I do if my boss is a jerk?” Most of this will be my opinion, but I will usually throw in a few resources and links to support my thoughts.
I will post 2-3 times a month, maybe more if you ask for it. Here is what I need from you. Please leave a comment below. Tell me what you want to read about. What are your biggest leadership challenges? What topics would you like more information on? Also, please share on your favorite social media of choice, so word gets out about this blog. Let’s build a learning community together to make this a fun and safe space to build our leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities. No matter is you are a complete zero or leadership hero; I know you will find something to make you an even better leader than you are today.
